Mr. Melanzana

If you’ve spent any time in electronic music circles, you’ve likely encountered Mr. Bill. The Sydney-born producer has long been celebrated for his intricate sound design and his ability to blur the edges between IDM and bass music. But beyond his vast catalogue and global performances, he’s built a culture around sharing: teaching production, hosting a podcast, and posting free resources online. For him, music isn’t just a craft—it’s a conversation. His latest release, “Mr. Melanzana,” grows from that same ethos. Developed with longtime collaborator Funilab for Tipper’s final Red Rocks show, the album expands on their audiovisual project “Sequenza di Melanzane.” Across 16 tracks, it captures the joy of collaboration and the quiet fulfilment that comes from creative exchange. Featuring Tipper, Spoonbill, COPYCATT, and Funilab, it feels like a communal act rather than a solo statement. Sitting somewhere between psybient and IDM, “Mr. Melanzana” avoids the genre’s tendency toward maximalism. Instead, it moves with confidence and restraint, allowing each sound to breathe. The detail is there for those who listen closely: the playful momentum of “Dino Tippioli,” the bass-heavy experimentation of “Pentimento” with Spoonbill, and the wistful calm of “Violet Shroud.” The album winds down with “Eggplant Sequence” and the Tipper collaboration “Burton Pigmentation,” closing on a psychedelic, almost meditative note. Less immediate than past releases like “Phantasmagoria,” this record feels more mature—unconcerned with spectacle, rooted in curiosity. It’s music made by someone who has nothing left to prove, only more to explore.
