Laugh It Off
Not everything that is wrapped within nostalgia has to feel sad. Not every lack has to be interpreted and lived with pain. Sometimes, what we need is to play around with it. And this is exactly what the LA-based artist Neska Rose does with her latest spoken-word single “Laught it off”. In a generation where hyperconnection means everything, sometimes, it’s important to remind ourselves that we don’t have to suffer everything that happens to us. We can embrace this new tendency to try to look at the bright side of what are usually negativities. In fact, lately, a sort of fashion of not hiding emotions, but instead making fun of them, has arisen. And Neska’s interesting single reflects this. Turning our feelings into something new doesn’t mean devaluing or depreciating them; it means wearing them with different clothes. Do you feel sad? Do you miss somebody? It’s fine, laugh it off. Think of the problematic and the details of the story you want to tell, and try to give a different key to reading. Even though reality may feel black and white, your emotions don’t have to do the same. You do not need people’s compassion and attention to feel good. The cinematic video of Neska Rose, in parallel with “Laugh it off”, teaches exactly this: laugh it off if the world ignores you. And I feel that this track perfectly mirrors Gen Z's approach to social media.
